Be Encouraging, and “Take Heart”…

You know, I love Elder Holland. He is encouraging. One of my favorite verses in scripture sounds better in the New International Version, found in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, which states:

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Elder Holland really is always encouraging the saints, both Mormon saints, and otherwise…

I was on Pinterest looking a few things up and ran across this meme. I loved it.

“If for a while the harder you try, the harder it gets, take heart. So it has been with the best people who ever lived.” (Jeffrey R. Holland, 1982)

So, I did a little research to find the talk this comes from. I’m always nervous that someone made up the quote and attributed it to an Apostle. Happily, I found the quote, and the talk. In 1982, Elder Holland was actually “President” Holland, president of Brigham Young University. The talk is entitled, “The Inconvenient Messiah” and is a wonderful study. You’ll find it here.

Elder Holland teaches us that when we are running out of patience with the frustrations of this life, we can remember that prophets, apostles, and the Savior Himself endured struggles. Their efforts didn’t always bring immediate success. So, “take heart”–you’re not alone…

I’ve learned two things tonight:

1. It is important to be encouraging.

2. It is important to allow yourself to be encouraged.

Take heart, and be encouraging…
